I choose an aquarium background to coordinate with the room the aquarium will be in, the gravel, the type of fish planned, etc. Very bright backgrounds can be less than calming, but may liven up a child's room. Any background will help to hide the cords and powerfilters hanging over the back of the tank.
Your background and gravel color selection set the tone for the aquarium. Neutral gravel colors will make your fish and plants appear brighter.
A mirrored background will double your 'apparent' fish, as you will see their reflections. A plain black or blue background will draw the eye forward to ornaments, decorations and fish, while a planted background can make even plastic plants look like 'part of the scene', or make cichlid tanks full of rocks look less bare of greenery.
